СПбИИ РАН и Филармония начали проект "Военная летопись Филармонии" 01

The tradition of storing and scientific restoration of documents and the tradition of studying the siege of Leningrad are two components that formed the basis of the joint historical and restoration project of St. Petersburg Philharmonia and St. Petersburg Institute of History “The Military chronicle of the Philharmonia”. The start of the project is timed to coincide with the 80th anniversary of the breakthrough of the blockade. The plans and expected results of its implementation were announced during a press conference on January 17, 2023 in the Great Hall of St. Petersburg Philharmonia.

To the 255th anniversary of Metropolitan Evgeny (Bolkhovitinov) – a virtual exhibition of one document

К 255-летию митрополита Евгения (Болховитинова) - виртуальная выставка одного документа

Metropolitan of Kyiv and Galicia Evgeniy (Efimiy Alekseevich Bolkhovitinov), the “Russian Miller” (as he was called in historiography) played one of the key roles in the formation and development of a number of humanitarian scientific disciplines – history, literary criticism, source studies, theology, etc. The archive of SPbIH of the RAS stores materials related to the life and work of Metropolitan Evgeny (Bolkhovitinov). In the collection of Nikolai Petrovich Likhachev (Coll. 238, inv. 2), draft notes and extracts made by him for his scientific works, official relations issued in the name of Metropolitan Eugene, as well as a whole complex of letters from the learned archpastor to various people were deposited. In his correspondence, Metropolitan Evgeniy appears as an enthusiastic interlocutor and an active scholar. Most of the letters were made on sheets from pocket notebooks, the edges of which were covered with gilding. The texts of the letters end with entries in Latin: “vive et nos amare perge tuus” (live and continue to love us), “tuus et amino” (your heart), etc.

Among them, letters to Vasily Grigorievich Anastasevich, a scientist and educator who was engaged in the transformation of the Vilna Academy, a person close to the circle of N. P. Rumyantsev, in whose work Metropolitan Evgeniy himself took an active part, stand out. In a message sent on April 9, 1817, the metropolitan calls V.G. Anastasevich as a “dear friend”, thanks for the two letters received and describes the outlandish thermometer “like a clock”.

The exhibition presents a fragment of a letter to V. G. Anastasevich and an engraved portrait of Metropolitan Evgeniy (Bolkhovitinov) from the collection of N.P. Likhachev.

The Paleographic Room of Academician Nikolai Petrovich Likhachev is recreated

Воссоздан Палеографический кабинет академика Н.П.Лихачева

On December 26, 2022, the Paleographic Room of Academician Nikolai Petrovich Likhachev was recreated at St. Petersburg Institute of History of the Russian Academy of Sciences within the framework of the project “The History of the Writing of European Civilization”. The paleographic hall, intitially was opened in 1918 and was intended to acquaint students with writing patterns and documents from different eras. The new exposition is made for historians, philologists, art historians, students of the humanities, as well as anyone interested in humanitarian history. In the recreated Palaeographic Room in the open storage form, genuine Western European and Russian documents of the 12th-19th centuries from the rich funds of the scientific and historical archive of St. Petersburg Institute of History, located in the House of Academician N.P. Likhachev are presented.

The first visitors to the Palaeographic Room were journalists who regularly collaborate with St. Petersburg Institute of History of the Russian Academy of Sciences. The guests were told about the new exhibition by scholars – Aleksey Vladimirovich Sirenov, Varvara Gelievna Vovina, Tatyana Anatolyevna Bazarova, Ivan Dmitrievich Travin and project designer Egor Anatolyevich Bogachev.

Answering the questions of journalists about the possibilities of visiting a new, bright exhibition space, presenting unique documents in a multimedia “frame”, A.V. Sirenov and V.G. Vovina noted that the Paleographic Room will be available not only for researchers, participants in scientific events or guests of SPbIH of the RAS, but also for a wide audience. Such excursions are planned to be held according to a special schedule and pre-registration. SPbIH of the RAS also plans to work with schoolchildren in the Paleographic Room.

The creation of the Paleographic Room of Academician N.P. Likhachev was one of the results of the implementation of a three-year grant from the Ministry of Education and Science “History of the Letters of European Civilization”, work on which is being completed in the outgoing year.

After the grand opening, the directorate and researchers of the SPbIH of the RAS had a conversation with journalists about further cooperation.

The letter from Archbishop of Westminster Henry Manning to Cardinal Luigi Pallotti – virtual exhibition

Письмо Вестминстерского архиепископа Генри Мэннинга кардиналу Луиджи Паллотти на виртуальной выставке

On December 25, part of the Christian world celebrates Christmas. On this day, believers rejoice at the birth of Jesus Christ, open gifts under the tree, sing laudatory hymns, or simply gather with family and friends at the festive table.

Nevertheless, for many, Christmas is not only a family holiday, but also a “professional” holiday, for example, for the clergy of the Roman Catholic Church. After all, the Catholic Church is an institution of colossal proportions, gathering under its auspices millions of people and directing tens of thousands of institutions. For priests, the bright holiday of Christmas means not only fasting and prayer, but also certain bureaucratic rituals.

We are told about this by a letter from the Archbishop of Westminster Henry Manning to Cardinal Luigi Pallotti (Archive of St. Petersburg Institute of History of the Russian Academy of Sciences, WES, coll. 18, box 380, item 7), dated December 10, 1888, stored in the archive of St. Petersburg Institute of History of the Russian Academy of Sciences. The document consists of two sheets of paper, on which the filigree is clearly visible: a lion standing on two legs, with a scepter and the inscription “Joynson Fine”. Most likely, the paper was produced at the William Joynson factory, founded in 1850 and located in Saint Mary Cray (Kent). The text of the letter takes only the front side of the first page and, apparently, was written by the archbishop’s secretary. Cardinal Manning himself only assured the letter with his signature.
