On the 80th anniversary of the beginning of the Great Patriotic War, on June 16-17, 2021 St. Petersburg Institute of History of the Russian Academy of Sciences and the Military Medical Museum will host the International Scientific Conference “1941. The Northern border”. The organizers of the conference are St. Petersburg Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences, the Military Medical Museum, the Russian State Archive of Social and Political History (RGASPI), the Political Encyclopedia Publishing House (ROSSPEN) with the support of the Norilsk Nickel company.

Since the beginning of the war, the northern front was one of the most important for the opposing sides. For the Third Reich and its allies, the seizure of the Soviet northern and northwestern seas and coast would largely mean the success of the “blitzkrieg”, since it would open the way to Leningrad (with its largest military-industrial complex enterprises in the country), Arkhangelsk, Murmansk and the Taimyr Peninsula (with gigantic sources of raw materials). At the cost of colossal efforts and losses, Soviet troops and civilians managed to delay the enemy’s advance, and then defend the northern borders of our country.    The agenda of the conference (in Russian) 

Round table “Landskrona, Nevskoe Ustye, Nyenskans in the history of Russia. A View from the 21st Century”dealing with the destiny of the Okhtinsky Cape, took place on June 3 in the framework of the popular science program of St. Petersburg Institute of History of the Russian Academy of Sciences “Discussions in the house of N.P. Likhachev”. Historians, archaeologists and museum experts from St. Petersburg and Vyborg took part in its work.

The main task of the meeting is to acquaint the audience with the history of the Okhtinsky Cape as an object of cultural heritage of Russia, as well as to discuss its cultural and historical significance for St. Petersburg in the 21st century.

This issue attracts the attention of not only specialists, but also everyone who cares about the destiny of St. Petersburg and its cultural, historical and geographical landscape. The study of archival documents reveals new facts. Material evidence of various eras that left their mark on the Okhta Cape may reveal possible future archaeological excavations. But already now we can speak with confidence about the colossal significance of this territory for the study of the history of the Neva lands and St. Petersburg, founded by the will of Peter the Great.

The reports delivered at the round table thoroughly examined different historical periods, which have manifested in different objects of the Okhtinsky cape.

On May 27, 2021 St. Petersburg celebrates the 318th anniversary of the city’s founding.

At  the virtual exhibition of one document timed to the City Day the decree of Metropolitan Iov of Novgorod and Velikie Luki (dated July 5, 1703) on the conscription of workers from the Novgorod land for the construction of the St. Petersburg fortress is presented.

In the book, Doctor of Historical Sciences. Yu.Z. Kantor, for the first time, unique documents are introduced into scientific circulation, making it possible to study previously unknown pages of the biography of M.N. Tukhachevsky and, no less important, consider them in the context of the events taking place in the country. The publication uses documents from 13 domestic and foreign archives, including the Central Archive of the FSB of the Russian Federation, the Archive of the FSB for St. Petersburg and Leningrad Region, the RGVA, the RGVIA, the RGASPI, the Bavarian Historical Archive, etc. Previously unknown text and photographic documents are published (from the Hermitage, the Museum of the Political History of Russia, the Historical Archive of the Omsk Region, the Omsk Museum of History and Local Lore, etc.)
