The international scientific conference “The History of the Writing of European Civilization” took place in St. Petersburg on October 10-14, 2022. The conference was held as part of the three-year scientific project “The History of the Writing of European Civilization”.

The history of the material and formal aspects of written culture has been an area of ​​scientific research for several centuries and remains relevant. St. Petersburg Institute of History of the Russian Academy of Sciences, the main organizer of the conference, is the keeper of the most valuable collection of written monuments of European countries and the oldest special center in Russia for their scientific study and publication.

During the scientific meetings of the conference, the tradition of Greek, Latin and Cyrillic writing has been discussed, taking into account the results of recent research in Russia and abroad, it was supposed to outline the prospects for studying the history of writing and written monuments.

Within the framework of the II International St. Petersburg Historical Forum, on October 11-12, 2022, the All-Russian Scientific Conference with international participation “USSR in the 1970s: results of development and prospects (on the occasion of the 45th anniversary of the Constitution of the USSR of 1977)” was held, organized by St. Petersburg Institute history of the Russian Academy of Sciences, the State Museum of the History of St. Petersburg and the scientific seminar “History of the Soviet era” (SPbIH RAS).

The conference aimed to discuss the following subjects:
– The social system of the USSR: politics, economics, social development and culture
– Foreign policy of the USSR
– State and personality: rights and obligations. Justice in the USSR
– The national-state structure of the Soviet Union
– Higher and local authorities and administrations
– The role of the CPSU in the Soviet Union in the 1970s.
– Soviet symbols and rituals.

24 participants spoke at the conference, including historians from Belarus (Minsk) and different cities of Russia (Arkhangelsk, Moscow, Petrozavodsk, St. Petersburg, Simferopol, Tyumen, Chelyabinsk).

In the reports and in the course of their discussion, the problems of the political and economic life of the Soviet state in the 1970s, the foreign policy of the Soviet Union, interethnic relations and social policy in the context of the USSR in the 1970s were raised.

Close attention was paid to the urgent reasons for changing the Constitution of the USSR of 1936, various aspects of foreign policy and the economic realities of the 1970s, which caused changes in the behavior of political elites and the rhetoric of public speeches. Numerous questions were raised by reports on the budgetary policy of the Soviet Union, the foreign trade of the USSR, and campaigns to streamline the use of official cars. A lively discussion unfolded around the concepts of “Soviet people”, “Soviet people”, “Soviet people”.

On September 29-30, St. Petersburg Institute of History of the Russian Academy of Sciences hosted the international conference “Textbook for the Future. A New Look”. Scholars from different countries exchanged their experience in teaching history in schools, talked about the content of modern school textbooks and methods of teaching in schools. Among other things, the problems of the correlation in the programs of national and general history, the question of how much reading of passages from historical sources should be included in school textbooks, whether it is necessary to acquaint students with the discussions that are ongoing in science, and much more. It was decided to continue sharing experience and knowledge in this area.

The conference program ended with a tour of the exhibition of documents stored in the Scientific and Historical Archive of St. Petersburg Institute of History of the Russian Academy of Sciences. Senior researchers N.B. Sredinskaya and M.E. Proskuryakova acquainted the forum participants with documents from the collection of St. Petersburg Institute of History, in particular, with handwritten textbooks, teaching aids, as well as European and Russian diplomas of the Middle Ages and Modern times.

The conference was organized by the Institute of General History of the Russian Academy of Sciences, the Russian Historical Society, St. Petersburg Institute of History of the Russian Academy of Sciences, the Institute for Advanced Historical Research and the All-Russian public organization “Association of Teachers of History and Social Studies” with the support of the Russian Peace Foundation.

On October 3-5, 2022, St. Petersburg will host the international scientific conference “Peter the Great and the Formation of Russian Science”, which is included in the “Plan of the main events for the preparation and holding of the celebration of the 350th anniversary of the birth of Peter I”.
The conference was organized by the Ministry of Science and Higher Education of the Russian Federation, St. Petersburg Institute of History of the Russian Academy of Sciences, St. Petersburg State University, the Committee for Science and Higher Education of the Government of St. Petersburg with the participation of the Library of the Russian Academy of Sciences, St. Petersburg Branch of the Archives of the Russian Academy of Sciences, the National Library of Russia, St. Petersburg Scientific Center of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Peter the Great Museum of Anthropology and Ethnography (Kunstkamera) of the Russian Academy of Sciences and the State Museum of the History of St. Petersburg. On October 3–5, specialists in various fields of knowledge — historians, philologists, linguists, art historians, museologists, cultural scientists, researchers in the history of science — will discuss a wide range of issues related to the formation and development of various branches of science, secular and spiritual education, book publishing, and the expansion of geographical knowledge in Russia of the Petrine Era. Considerable attention will be paid to the creation and early history of the Academy of Sciences and Arts, as well as the impact of Peter the Great’s reforms on Russian science and education.

More than 80 scholars from the largest scientific centers of the Russian Federation – Moscow, St. Petersburg, Yekaterinburg, Novosibirsk, Omsk, as well as from the UK, France and Belarus will speak at the plenary and breakout sessions. Including well-known Russian historians: director of the St. Petersburg Institute of History of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Corresponding Member of the RAS Doctor of History A.V. Sirenov, Director of St. Petersburg Branch of the Archives of the Russian Academy of Sciences Corresponding Member of the RAS Doctor of History I.V. Tunkina, Chief Researcher of SPbIH RAS, Doctor of History E.V. Anisimov, Chief Researcher of the Institute of the History of Natural Science and Technology, Russian Academy of Sciences, Doctor of History I.N. Yurkin and others.

On September 27-29, the Fifth International Scientific Conference “Trade, merchants and customs in Russia in the 16th-20th centuries” was held in Novosibirsk on the basis of the Institute of History of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences, organized by a consortium of academic institutions (Institute of History of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Institute of History and archeology of the Ural Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences, the Institute of Russian History of the Russian Academy of Sciences and the St. Petersburg Institute of History of the Russian Academy of Sciences).

Employees of St. Petersburg Institute of Science and Technology of the Russian Academy of Sciences took part in the conference.

Issues related to the study of social, economic, legal, political aspects of the history of trade, merchants and customs in Russia in the 16th–20th centuries have been brought up for discussion. (from 1500 to 1991 inclusive).

The regional scientific conference “Tikhvin Region in the 12th–20th centuries”, organized by St. Petersburg Institute of History of the Russian Academy of Sciences in companionship with the Tikhvin Historical, Memorial and Architectural and Art Museum, was conducted on September 26-27, 2022 in the Teffi Library (Tikhvin).

The conference examined various aspects of the history of the Tikhvin region, in particular referring to the Assumption Tikhvin Monastery. The reports of the institute’s staff are based on documents from the fund of the Assumption Tikhvin Monastery from the Archive of St. Petersburg Institute of History of the Russian Academy of Sciences.
