International scientific conference

Saint Petersburg Institute of History of the RAS (SPbIH of the RAS) in cooperation with the National Library of Russia (NLR) and Federal Service for Alcohol Market Regulation with participation of International association of researchers of trade history, merchant class and customs and JSC “CentrInform” on 28-30 September, 2020 will conduct International Scientific Conference “Istoriya piteinogo dela i trezvennicheskogo dvizheniya v Rossii s drevneishikh vremen do nashikh dnei” [“The istory of beverage manufacturing and abstinence movement in Russia from ancient times to modern times”].

Plenary and sectional sessions of the conference will be held in both SPbIH of the RAS and the National Library of Russia. The publication of collection of articles based on the reports delivered by participants of the conference is to be issued after the conference. New publication

 Publishing house “Pushkinskii fond” issued a collection of documents “Ministry finansov imperatorskoi Rossii E.F. Kankrin, M.Ch. Reitern, N.Ch. Bunge” [“The Ministers of Finance of the Imperial Russia E.F. Kankrin, M.Ch. von Reutern, N.Ch. Bunge”] composed by I.V. Lukoianov as a part of the series “Gosudarstvennye deyateli Rossii glazami sovremennikov” [“The Statesmen of Russia in the Eyes of Contemporaries”], ISBN 9785604279946. 

The book incorporates extracts from publicistic and literary works, memoirs and diaries of the contemporaries of E.F. Kankrin, M.Ch. von Reutern, N.Ch. Bunge – the Ministers of Finance of the imperial Russia, who held this position for more than 40 years and greatly contributed to the development of the Russian economy. These materials describe the abovementioned people as both the statesmen and persons. Statements of witnesses present to the readers how the role of the Ministry of Finance and its chief changed throughout 19th century. The book includes detailed commentary, index of names, glossary of special terms and has an inset with copies of archival documents.

On the centenary of the signing of the Svalbard Treaty

On October 29–30, 2020 in Arkhangelsk the international scientific conference “The Svalbard archipelago: From terra nullius to the site of interaction. On the 100th anniversary of the signing of the Svalbard Treaty” will take place.

The conference is organised by St Petersburg Institute of History, Russian Academy of Sciences; Federal Research Center for Integrated Arctic Studies named after academician N. P. Laverov, Ural Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences; Arkhangelsk Regional Museum; Political Encyclopedia Publishers (“ROSSPEN”) and OJSC MMC Norilsk Nickel (“Nornickel”).

Emperor Alexander III expressed a wish to write a study on the history of the tsars’ hunt while visiting hunting ground in Gatchina. It was ordered to colonel N.I. Kutepov, who recruited scholars and collectors A.F. Bychkov, P.Ya. Dashkov, N.P. Likhachov, V.V. Stasov,… Numerous archive materials have been examined and included to this publication.

Scientific seminar “Russia in the Modern Era (the 18th – the beginning of the 20th cc.): the state and the society”

Saint Petersburg Institute of History of the RAS welcomes everyone to the session of the seminar “Russia in the Modern Era (the 18th – the beginning of the 20th cc.): the state and the society”
The report by Candidate of Sciences in Philology M.Yu. Koreneva and Candidate of Sciences in Philology E.O. Larionova (Institute of Russian Literature (Pushkinskij Dom), RAS) «The archive of Turgenev brothers: contemporary status and prospectives of study and publication of manuscript materials»  will be delivered. the NEP period”)

The book for the first time in historiography on the basis of wide amount of different sources (law and regulations, unpublished archival documents, statistical materials, periodicals, diaries and memoirs of contemporaries) presents to the readers a complex study of the features of the food market of the greatest city centre of the Soviet Russia – Petrograd-Leningrad in the period of the New Economic Policy (1921-1928). This study may be of interest to both specialists and vast circles of public.

The new book “Leningrad i leningradtsy v gody Velikoi Otechestvennoi voiny 1941-1945” (“Leningrad and Leningraders in the years of the Great Patriotic War 1941-1945”)composed by A.N. Tchistikov in collaboration with E.P. Shelaeva and D.P. Mitiurin has been published by ANO ROSSICA “Liki” (ISBN 978-5-87417-610-5).

The publication incorporates historical essays, documents from state and private archives, diaries and memoirs of Leningrad citizens, which outline different aspects of the everyday life of the city in the years 1941-1945. The book has a wide range of illustrative materials (more than 650 images) including archival and modern photographs, sketches, engravings, posters and paintings of war and post-war periods.
